What’s Happening in Northern Michigan: Harvest Stompede, Evening Sail, Bridge Walk

Labor Day is around the corner! There’s not much of summer left in Northern Michigan, but there’s still plenty to do!

Courtney Sheffer from the West Michigan Tourist Association has some ideas in this week’s What’s Happening in Northern Michigan.

Harvest Stompede

Join the Harvest Stompede along the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail on September 7 & 8.

This annual weekend kicks off the fall harvest season along the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail, and features crisp and bright cool-climate wines and culinary delights that reflect the season’s bounty.

This event includes a self-guided tour along the trail, where you’re free to visit any of the 27 participating wineries in any order you choose on both Saturday and Sunday.

Your ticket will get you a souvenir wine glass, along with a featured wine and small bite food pairing at all 27 wineries.

Evening Sky Gazing Sail

Join the Inland Seas Education Association for their Evening Sky Gazing Sail on August 30, and again on September 28.

The open water is an ideal place to experience the brilliance of the stars in Northern Michigan’s dark skies.

And there is no more informative place to view them than from the deck of a 77-foot schooner!

During this two-hour sail, a professional astronomer will be there to help you identify what is visible in the night sky.

You’ll learn about the history and science of the night sky, while enjoying the peacefulness of being under sail at dark.

Labor Day Weekend in St. Ignace

Head to St. Ignace for Labor Day weekend, where they’ll have fun for the whole family.

Head downtown on Sunday, September 1 for the free, outdoor Movie by the Bay.

They’ll be showing “Mary Poppins Returns,” so bring your chair or blanket and enjoy the summer evening.

Stay overnight in St. Ignace, and catch a free shuttle to the bridge for the Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk on Monday, as well as free trolleys through St. Ignace all day, and the chance to win free ferry tickets, hotel stays, and more.
