‘Caps Get Base Hit in 8-0 Loss

The West Michigan Whitecaps got one-hit for the first time since 2012 as part of an 8-0 loss in front of 6,179 fans Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field.

West Michigan has lost 10 of their last 11, the first six games of its eight-game road trip and was held scoreless in a ballgame for the twelfth time this season. Outfielder Danny Reyes began the ninth with a leadoff single to break up a no-hitter, leading to the first-time the ‘Caps have been one hit since an 8-0 loss at Cedar Rapids on May 1, 2012.

The TinCaps struck first with an RBI-single by Ethan Skender to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth. In the seventh, the Whitecaps bullpen entered to give up seven runs in a 47-pitch inning with relievers Angel Reyes and Jose Vasquez, who combined to allow a leadoff home run to Justin Lopez and walk the next four batters drew walks before a two-run single by Dewanya Williams-Sutton. Fort Wayne extended their lead to 8-0 highlighted by Skender’s RBI-double and a run-scoring single by Lopez. At one point in the contest, 16 straight West Michigan hitters had been retired in-order.

Cantillo (9-3) tossed six scoreless hitless innings while walking three and working around his wildness while striking out seven in earning his ninth victory. Jesus Rodriguez (0-1) tossed six innings of one-run baseball and struck out two in taking his first loss since returning to the ‘Caps. West Michigan falls to 35-76 in 2019 and 14-28 in the second half. The TinCaps improve to 50-60 and 17-25 in the second-half standings. Skender and Lopez each collected a pair of base hits to pace the Fort Wayne offense in their second straight victory of the series.

Before the ballgame, a moment of silence was observed in honor of the victims from the tragedy that took place in Dayton, Ohio early Sunday morning. The Dragons and Lake County Captains Sunday contest was postponed and is scheduled to be made up as a Monday doubleheader at Fifth Third Field.
