August Programs at Grass River Natural Area

Visit the Grass River Natural Area in August for a series of special programs and activities.

August 1 – ART: The Wonder of Bumble Bees Thursday, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Join Sheridan Haack, bumble bee enthusiast, for a presentation on the ecology and ID of bumble bees, then go for a hike to photograph and find the bees! $5 per person. Grass River Natural Area is located at 6500 Alden Highway, Bellaire.

kayak tripAugust 2 – Kayak Grass River, 9:00am – 11:30am

There is no better way to experience Grass River than by paddling its calm waters and enjoying its unique wildlife! On these guided tours, visitors explore Grass River by kayak and find out about GRNA’s conservation efforts, wetland plants, and wildlife. $25 per person, $45 with kayak rental.  This program meets off-site at the end of Grass River Road off of M-88. No restrooms at launch site.

August 2 – Nature Story Time, Weekly, 10 am – 11:30 am

Each week enjoy a short children’s story and an activity or a hike on the beautiful trails at Grass River. For young children ages 4 and up, but all ages welcome. $5 per child. Larger groups please call ahead.

August 3 – Reptiles & Amphibians at Antrim Creek Natural Area, 10am – 12 pm

Go on a guided hike with GRNA staff at Antrim Creek Natural Area to learn about the reptiles and amphibians at ACNA. This is one of three hikes at ACNA this summer. Each hike you will learn a different part of  Antrim Creek’s ecology. Location: Antrim Creek Natural Area. South Entrance, Old Dixie Hwy, Atwood.

August 6 – Blooms and Birds Wildflower Walk, 10 am – 12 pm

Go for a relaxing stroll on the trails with GRNA docent Julie Hurd each week to find and identify the beautiful and unique wildflowers at Grass River. Along the way we will listen and look for the birds that call Grass River home. Every Tuesday at 10am. Donations are always appreciated.

pontoon cruiseAugust 7 – Morning Pontoon Cruise, 9 am – 11 am

Join a Grass River Naturalist for a relaxing pontoon tour of the river to look for wildlife, learn the natural history of the river, and understand GRNA’s conservation work. The tour group meets at the Grass River Center by 8:45 am and then walks to the dock to board the pontoon. The cost is $25 per person and you must preregister. Call 231-533-8314.

August 7 – Yoga in the Outdoors, 10 am – 11 am

Start the morning with stretching & breathing in the fresh northern Michigan air. Jason Minaker, certified yoga instructor, will lead the class. All abilities welcome. Bring a mat if you have one. $5 per person. More information at grassriver.org.

Clay pot classAugust 8 – ART: Create with Clay,  10:00am – 11:30am

Join us in this popular pottery class where we use clay to make pinch pots, native animals, & more. We’ll also use some natural clay from the creek. This class is appropriate for all ages. $8, must pre-register.
