Journeyman Distillery’s handcrafted organic spirits are collecting accolades and earning a loyal following among Whiskey enthusiasts across the country, but locally they’ve built a reputation with a much different demographic—families.
“Family-friendly distillery” might sound like an oxymoron, but for proprietors Bill and Johanna Welter it’s a natural fit. “Journeyman is more than a business to us. It’s a labor of love” explains Bill. “We want to build something that will be here for future generations.”
You’ll find the next generation of Welters—6-year-old Islay—at Journeyman’s Staymaker Restaurant most Sundays, where brunch is served from 10 until 2pm. The eclectic buffet includes everything from traditional breakfast items, to pizza, salad, and tacos. While adults rave about the build-your-own Bloody Mary Bar, Islay is a fan of the buffet’s Donut Bar.
Open 362 days a year, Staymaker is both family- and parent-friendly. Cocktails (crafted with house-made syrups and Journeyman spirits) range from classic to creative. Grown-up and kid menus boast freshly prepared food made from locally sourced ingredients when available. Sauces and condiments, including the tangy Bourbon ketchup, are made from scratch in Staymaker’s prep kitchen.
Those are the details worth sweating, according to Johanna. You’ll find evidence of her attention to detail (and commitment to hospitality) in every aspect of the Journeyman experience. The lovingly updated historic factory building deftly showcases relics of an industrial past in a way that’s inviting and chic—just ask the hundreds of brides and grooms who tie the knot here each year. Instagram-worthy photo-ops abound.
One of the most unusual features at Journeyman is outside its back door. There you’ll find a Scottish-inspired 30,000 square foot, 18-hole putting green by the name of Welter’s Folly. On a warm spring day, there may be no better place to enjoy a cocktail.
To experience the very best of Journeyman, however, you must take one of their unforgettable distillery tours. Knowledgeable guides take you behind the scenes for an immersive adventure spanning culture, politics, and science. At tour’s end, adults of legal age can taste a wide variety of Journeyman spirits—each distilled, bottled, served and sold on site, in Three Oaks, MI.
Journeyman Distillery and Staymaker Restaurant are open 7 days a week, offering lunch, dinner, cocktails, and Sunday brunch. Reservations are available for parties of 8 or more. Visit journeymandistillery.com for hours, tour reservations, a calendar of events, and much more.
