When people think about a Northern Michigan winter vacation lodging location, they think about comfortable rooms, great views, relaxation and fireplaces. And some of the best lodging icons of Northern Michigan are boutique historic hotels that create the feeling of comfort and warmth that remind us of our heritage. The Hotel Frankfort in Benzie County is one of the most distinctive and majestic boutique hotels along the coast of Lake Michigan. Located two blocks from Frankfort’s exquisite beach along Lake Michigan with sunset views that rival any in the world, the Hotel Frankfort is a shining beacon hosting visitors 365 days a year.
Owned by Judy Remmert since 2014, the Hotel Frankfort includes 17 unique rooms featuring comfortable queen and king-sized beds, with luxury rooms that include jet tubs and Swedish style saunas. Hotel Frankfort’s restaurant features a beautiful dining room with a fireplace, a nautically designed full bar, a wine cellar, as well as, roomy event space. The Hotel Frankfort is reminiscent of a European boutique hotel, which is the reason that Remmert was delighted when she found it saying, “It’s everything I wanted – a boutique hotel and restaurant. I lived in the Netherlands and Switzerland where every town had a central historic hotel. The Hotel Frankfort reminded me a lot of The Schwann Inn in Horgen, Switzerland and when I laid eyes on it I knew this was the place for me.” Remmert lived in Horgen Switzerland between 2006 – 2009 and ever since, had wanted a boutique hotel property that had its own restaurant with a great wine selection. The Hotel Frankfort had everything she was looking for.
Judy moved from Ann Arbor to Frankfort soon after making the offer on the hotel in 2014. She has been renovating and putting all of the money that she’s made right back into the hotel since she purchased, but is delighted with the results of her efforts and believes it is one of the most unique properties anywhere in the state of Michigan. She states, “I’ve lived and worked in this community for five years now and I love it here! As a first-time business owner, I’m delighted with the friendliness, community spirit, and comradery that I’ve experienced in Benzie. Other hotels and lodging locations work together here in making our guests comfortable. We refer people to each other all of the time.”
The restaurant is open on weekends (Friday and Saturday evening) and highlights the creations of Chef Ronnie Fiel, former Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club chef. With an Americana menu, the food is all Fiel’s signature dishes, with a few borrowed from his grandmother including the stellar meatloaf and pumpkin soup. In February, the Hotel Frankfort will feature a 5-course wine dinner to celebrate Valentine’s Day. There will be one seating at 5 p.m. More information about Valentine’s Day Wine Dinner pricing and reservations will be available at thehotelfrankfort.com.
The Hotel Frankfort is located at Main Street and 3rd Avenue in Frankfort. Since1869 a hotel has stood on that corner. Restaurants within one block of the hotel include Stormcloud Brewing Company, Villa Marine, and Fusion. Others within a short walking distance are Birch & Maple, Dinghy’s and the Crescent Bakery.
This winter the Hotel Frankfort is partnering with Crystal Mountain on a “Stay and Ski” package that includes an overnight stay and two daily lift tickets ranging in price between $200 – $300 depending on room type. The Benzie Bus will also provide door to door service from Hotel Frankfort to Crystal Mountain when arranged in advance.
