The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will continue its tradition of exhibiting and selling the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection now through November 25, with the sale of prints beginning Saturday, October 22, 2018.
A reception and viewing of the prints will begin at 9:30 am with the sale beginning at 10:00 am. Sales will be conducted by a lottery, since many of the prints will be in high demand. This year the Dennos has two sets of the prints to sell making purchase easier. Interested buyers may view the prints at www.dennosmuseum.org or dorsetfinearts.com and receive lottery information by calling the museum store 231- 995-1586. Customers need not be present to purchase a print.
The 59th Annual Cape Dorset Collection consists of 34 images by 11 artists. Cape Dorset, a place that had humble beginnings as a settlement founded in 1913 intended as a trading post for the Hudson’s Bay Company, has since come a long way. Known as Kinngait in Inuktitut, it now boasts a population of 1400 and is home to many artists who have, over the years, brought much renown from the world to a small unassuming town in the Canadian Arctic.
This year Cape Dorset celebrated the inaugural opening of the Kenojuak Cultural Center (KCC) in September. For a community that boasts the highest number of artist per capita in the country and previously had no public gallery or learning space for artists, there are high expectations for the KCC to further consolidate and strengthen local visual culture in the years to come.
The 2018 collection presents an exciting mix of themes; comforting and naturalistic are juxtaposed with familiar motifs presented in bold, new perspectives. The collection features well-known names and many new emerging artists.
Proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase new work for the Dennos Museum Inuit Collection.
