Labor Day in West Michigan

Every year, the first Monday of September is designated as Labor Day: a celebration of the achievements of our nation’s workforce. The day is also considered the unofficial end of summer. Take this as an opportunity to spend time with family as they head back to school, or grab some friends and enjoy a nice, long weekend seeing what is going on in the area. Many West Michigan locations are hosting fun events throughout the weekend, meaning you won’t need to go far to find something fun each day of the three-day weekend.

Labor Day in Southern West Michigan

Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek is hosting the ultimate date night over Labor Day weekend with the Sunset on Savanna event on Friday, September 1st. Enjoy an evening of small bites, select wines, and live music in Wild Africa. Go the extra mile and extend the experience with an overnight stay with amenities in their own Tented Camp! Awaken in the morning to coffee and breakfast while you watch the animals descend upon the savanna.

After a long day of making cider, Virtue Cider in Fennville wants to treat guests to live music by Steven Gilpin on Friday, September 1st from 6pm to 8pm. Delicious cider and food will be available for purchase throughout the evening.

Check out events in St. Joseph throughout Labor Day weekend: Events include Lake Bluff Artisan Faire on Saturday, September 2nd, Antiques on the Bluff on Sunday, September 3rd, Horse-Drawn Trolley Rides on Saturday, September 3rd, and a performance by the St. Joseph Municipal Band on Monday, September 4th. The Nina and Pinta are docking at the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven over Labor Day weekend. See these incredible replicas of the original ships Columbus sailed to the new world! The ships will be at the Michigan Maritime Museum docks through Monday, September 4th, and visitors will be able to tour both dockside. Admission is $15 for adults, $14 for seniors, and $10 for children, and includes all museum exhibits in addition to both ships. Now’s your chance to experience history first hand!

A visit to South Haven over Labor Day weekend can also include arts, crafts, and an ox roast. The 41st Annual All Crafts Fair is at Stanley Johnston Park on September 2nd and 3rd, with over 200 vendors bringing handmade and artisan items. Also over Labor Day weekend is the 33rd Annual Homecoming & Ox Roast from September 1st to 3rd. Enjoy plenty of family fun throughout the weekend, all culminating in the delicious ox roast. Labor Day weekend in South Haven is packed to the brim with things to do!

Head to Coldwater Country for something different this Labor Day weekend, and take a ride with the Little River Railroad’s Lazy Days of Summer Special. On Sunday, September 3rd, passengers can climb aboard for a 45-minute round trip ride. Sit back and enjoy a peaceful steam engine ride listening to the sounds of the train.

Round out the shortened Labor Day week with the Marshall Historical Society’s 54th Annual Historic Home Tour on Saturday, September 9th and Sunday, September 10th. This year, there will be more than 20 sites, including six private residences, with each home representing a different style, from gothic revival and cottage to Italianate and second empire. There will also be eight museums and two Michigan Avenue buildings on the tour.

As your Labor Day week comes to an end, head over to the Allegan County Fair for nine days of fun from September 8th to 16th! Fan-favorite events like the rodeo, off-road derby, super cross racing, tractor pull, and more are returning. Live entertainment includes Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, Thomas Rhett, Alabama, and more. End the short week with plenty of family-fun entertainment!

The annual Paw Paw Bridge Walk was the brainchild of former Zeeland Councilman and now Ottawa County Commissioner Al Dannenberg. He wanted to offer a local alternative for people not able or willing to participate in the annual Mackinac Bridge Walk. The Paw Paw Bridge Walk is 35 yards in length, and the first 35 people to cross the bridge will again receive a certificate of completion This year’s walk is on September 4th and is the final year that Commissioner Dannenberg and his wife will be hosting the event.

Labor Day in Central West Michigan

The Grand Rapids Treetop Adventure Park is hosting a special Glow Night from September 1st through 3rd. Climb through the forest under LED and black lights to fun music at these special glow-themed events. The Labor Day special runs from 7pm to 11pm with final call for tickets at 8:30pm.

The Ludington area has events throughout the Labor Day weekend. On Saturday, September 2nd, the Corn Maze opens at the Lewis Farm Market. Can you find your way out of this year’s maze? You have between September 2nd and the end of the season to prove your corn maze skills! Also over the holiday weekend is the Manitowoc Wisconsin Kite Fest Shoreline Cruise aboard the S.S. Badger in Manitowac, Wisconsin. Or, you can check out the “Go Green! Go Blue!” shoreline cruise aboard the Badger. Cheer on your favorite team on this fun cruise!

In Mecosta County, the arrival of Labor Day means that the Annual Arts and Crafts Festival is set to take over Big Rapids! The Arts and Crafts Festival starts at 10am on Monday, September 4th and runs until 4pm. Many locals will be at the festival, showing off their creations.

White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 11th Annual Labor Day Community Walk on September 4th at 10am. They want to give more Michiganders an opportunity to participate in these Labor Day walking traditions by encouraging residents to participate in a local community walk just like this one!

Labor Day in Northern West Michigan

Each Labor Day, tens of thousands of pedestrians from Michigan and beyond gather in the Straits of Mackinac to take part in one of the state’s most significant annual events: The Mackinac Bridge Walk. This year’s event will take place on Monday, September 4th from 7am to 10am. Upon reaching Mackinaw City, walkers are awarded a numbered “Certificate of Completion,” and school busses will shuttle walkers back to their cars.

Labor Day at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville means a weekend full of family fun. Activities include Crystal Coaster Alpine Slide, Vertical Edge Climbing Wall, Paintball, and more.
