The flowers are back in bloom at Windmill Island Gardens! While tulips are just a memory, there are thousands of annuals and perennial flowers in peak bloom throughout the gardens. In celebration of this wondrous display of color, Windmill Island Gardens will be celebrating Peak Bloom Week all next week.
Windmill Island Gardens celebrates a theme each year and 2017 highlights ‘The Artful Garden’. Staff designed and planted flower beds throughout the park to mimic famous pieces of art. Artists represented range from Van Gogh to Warhol to Rembrandt. Development Director Matt Helmus believes visitors will be “amazed by the hard work of the horticulture staff in creating and maintaining such magnificent looking arrangements.” There are also several new art-themed sculptures for visitors to enjoy.
As part of the celebration, Windmill Island Gardens is partnering with Kids’ Food Basket in the attack on childhood hunger. Kids receive free admission throughout the week when providing an item from the Kids’ Food Basket wish list that includes granola bars, snack-size zipper bags, fruit/applesauce cups, toasted oat cereal, cheese crackers and pretzel twists. Staff is excited to partner with an organization that has such a positive impact on the Holland community.
Young guests are also invited to color lunch bags for Kids’ Food Basket and enjoy a number of activities to help them discover the beautiful grounds around the Island. Of course, these are in addition to the mainstay attractions including a windmill tour, dancing along to the Dutch street organ and a ride on the children’s carousel.
Peak Bloom Week runs from Sunday, July 23rd to Saturday, July 29th. More information on this and other events at Windmill Island Gardens can be found at windmillisland.org.
