Grand Rapids Distillery Awarded Double Gold at International Spirits Competition

Grand Rapids-based Long Road Distillers has been awarded several new honors, this time coming from the 2017 Denver International Spirits Competition. The distillery was awarded a Double Gold medal for Long Road Aquavit. They also won Silver medals for Long Road Cherry Brandy and Long Road Old Aquavit, and a Bronze medal for Long Road Gin.

Spirits from around the world were entered into the 7th Annual Denver International Spirits Competition, with a 70% increase in entrants from last year. The double blind competition is based on a 100 point scale and spirits are judged within price categories. Judges cast their votes for the best spirit entries and award medals for first (Gold), second (Silver), and third (Bronze) place for each qualifying category.

Long Road’s Aquavit was awarded Best of Show at the 2016 Denver International Spirits Competition, tying Dewar’s Signature Scotch. Best of Show honors for 2017 have yet to be released.

Aquavit is a traditional Scandinavian spirit flavored with a variety of botanicals, similar to gin. However, rather than juniper being the predominant flavor, Aquavit requires that caraway or dill are the predominant flavors. Long Road Aquavit incorporates caraway, fresh dill, dill seed, cumin, star anise, and a handful of other botanicals to offer a unique twist on the traditional favorite.

Last month, Long Road Aquavit took home Best of Show and Best of Category awards at the American Craft Spirits Association Awards in Nashville, TN. It has won similar honors in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

“While Aquavit may be a lesser-known category, it is definitely becoming the thing we’re known for around the country and the world,” said Jon O’Connor, Co-owner of Long Road Distillers. “We’re excited to showcase this Scandinavian favorite, made from West Michigan ingredients right here in our neighborhood!”
