About the Village of Pentwater

The Village of Pentwater was incorporated on March 16, 1867 by the Michigan Legislature. The settlement of Pentwater began in 1853 with the opening of a sawmill which burgeoned into a great lumbering industry. At one time this site was the largest shingle mill in the United States. Due to the excellent shipping facilities, factories for brick, furniture and foundry grew.

In the 1900s, Pentwater soon became known as a wonderful resort area. Charles Mears State Park, founded by deed of the early Charles Mears lumber baron of fifty acres is located in the Village of Pentwater. There are many Victorian homes and cottages throughout the historic village. The Village Green survives and is the site of the seasonal Thursday night Civic Band Concerts for the past 69 years. Highlights of the annual summer season are the mid-July Annual Fine Arts Fair and the August Pentwater Homecoming Celebration.

As of today, Pentwater’s fame of natural beauty, fishing, boating, fine parks, beaches, golden sand dunes and harbors is widespread and lure many summer visitors. Many find Pentwater very picturesque a delightful place to live.
