Winter is a special time in West Michigan. With snow on the ground, it’s time to break out the skis, snowboards, and snowshoes. We’re very fortunate to have a few months to soak it all in, and West Michigan wants to ensure that you get the most out of this season. Snow Sports & Activities in Southern West Michigan
Pierce Cedar Creek Institute in Hastings is open on Saturdays in January for what they are calling “Active Saturdays!” From 9am to 4pm, the visitor center will be renting snowshoes and having family crafts and games for anybody looking for some winter activities. Their trails and sledding hill will also be open and accessible from dawn to dusk. Saturdays are going to be a whole lot more fun this month with Pierce Cedar Creek Institute’s lineup of family fun.
Bay Pointe Inn in Shelbyville has a fantastic deal on lift tickets! Get discounted lift tickets at nearby ski resorts when you stay at the inn. Winter is the perfect time to stay with low rates starting at $89. Ski and snowboard to your heart’s content, before returning back to the inn for a great night’s rest.
Coldwater Country has everything that you need to get out and have fun this winter! With over 100 lakes, plan a trip ice fishing for a unique take on the sport. They even have a Free Fishing Weekend on February 18th and 19th for those without a fishing license who are interested. Stay warm, but make sure to have plenty of fun while you’re out on the ice!
If you’re in need of some community fun in Coldwater, the annual IceFest returns on January 28th. Check out more than 20 custom-carved ice blocks that line the streets of downtown Coldwater. Warm up during the Battle of the Bowls soup and chili cook-off, and vote for your favorite! Later that night is the second annual United We Crawl Pub Crawl! Each stop will feature drink specials and fun games. Along the crawl, stop at Tibbits Opera House to see a performance by Foreigners Journey. IceFest is sure to be a day filled with fun for everybody in the family, topped off with a great crawl around town!

Snow Sports & Activities in Central West Michigan
Celebrate January in the crisp country air of Double JJ Resort in Rothbury. Have the time of your life as you race down their 660 foot tubing hill, or climb aboard one of their horse-drawn sleighs for a magical glide through the snowy woods. They have overnight stay packages through the winter, so that you will have a place nearby to warm up by the fire or in your jacuzzi. Double JJ Resort is an all-seasons destination, and winter just happens to be one of their favorites!
The Irons Area maintains 120 miles of some of the best snowmobile trails in the Northwest Lower Peninsula of Michigan. They’ll be putting their trails to the test with their Blessing of the Sleds on January 7th. All of their trails are groomed by a crew of dedicated volunteers to ensure that you’re riding with ease. Enjoy your time in the Irons Area this winter, and make sure to thank any volunteer that you see working hard to maintain these great trails!
Muskegon has a place that is dedicated to winter activities. Located in Muskegon State Park, the Winter Sports Complex offers exciting events and outdoor sports facilities to the public, including one of only four publicly accessible luge tracks in the United States. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, and sledding are available on 5 miles of groomed track, day or night! The center’s big event, Party in Your Parka, is January 21st from 11am to 11pm. There will be plenty of winter sports, arts and crafts, live entertainment, food, and Michigan craft beers.
