The Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM), continues its very popular Beer Explorers program this winter beginning on December 15th. The series of winter programs will be held in partnership with Founders Brewing Company on Thursday evenings.
Join the Grand Rapids Public Museum to learn more about the roots of brewing beer in the next installation of Beer Explorers. Each class will offer a different hands-on experience related to the brewing and tasting of beer.
The three classes will be held in the series: December 15th, January 12th and February 16th. Classes begin at 6pm and will be held on the 1st floor of the GRPM. Admission to each class includes general admission to the Museum as well as three beer samples. A cash bar will also be available.
Tickets to Beer Explorers is $8 for Museum members and $18 for non-members. Participants must be 21 and older. Tickets can be purchased at grpm.org.
December 15th – History of Beer
Explore the history of beer in the world and within Grand Rapids with experts from the Museum and from Founders Brewing Company. GRPM Curator Alex Forist will highlight the history of beer, focusing on Grand Rapids and its past and present within the City. Michael Steil, from Founders’ education team, will share the science of the beer making process, including what makes Founders beer unique. Historic beer artifacts from the Museum’s Collections will also be on display for an up close look at history!
January 12th – Beer Pairings
A tasting experience that explores what makes certain beers and desserts work together. Founders experts will guide visitors through a program that investigates the sense of taste and what combinations are appealing to your palate!
February 16th – Barrel Aging
Learn about the process of Barrel Aging and how different factors affect the taste and quality of the beer.
Michael Steil moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan from Illinois in 1998 to further his education and ended up staying for the beer. He was lucky enough to study in Europe in 2003 and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa from 2006 to 2008. He returned to Michigan with a bolstered sense of service and community. In 2010 he started working at Founders Brewing Company and immediately found himself in a company that exemplified both, and he has not looked back since. Michael now works for Founders as the Curriculum Coordinator in the ever expanding education department which affords him the opportunity to educate both Founders staff and the public about the beauty of a well brewed beer. He lives for the simple things in life like travel, a glass full of something tasty, and a well-crafted meal; and he is finds himself blessed to work in a position where he gets to spread his love of all three.
