BontebOktoberfest is named for the bontebok, a rare species of antelope found in the Western Cape area of South Africa. Although wild populations experienced dramatic declines to less than 20 animals in the 19th century due to overhunting, the species has recovered following increased protection. Numbers of 1500 are believed to exist today within their native range, with an additional 2000 found in other places like Binder Park Zoo. The bontebok is part of a Species Survival Plan (SSP) through the Association of Zoo and Aquariums (AZA) and proceeds from BontebOktoberfest helps support conservation efforts that the Zoo participates in.
