The Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM) invites classrooms to learn more about native cultures that call West Michigan home at the annual Native American Culture Days on November 3 & 4. Programs over the two days will highlight the rich and vibrant nature of local Anishinabek culture.
Native American Culture Days celebrates the Native American culture in the region and gives students the opportunity to learn firsthand about their dance and music, regalia and immerse themselves in the rich history. Some highpoints from the day will include storytelling, drumming, games, dancing, corn husk doll making and learning about traditional foods and shelter.
The two-day event will include different stations throughout the Museum’s three floors, offering a variety of exciting and educational activities for students’ enjoyment. Native American Culture Days offer the opportunity to learn about the native cultures of Michigan as students’ tour theAnishinabek: The People of this Place exhibition. This core Museum exhibit highlights the Ottawa, Potawatomi and Chippewa people of West Michigan. Through direct quotes, video interviews, family photographs, and rare artifacts, Museum visitors learn directly from West Michigan’s Anishinabek community about their achievements and cultural heritage.
The activities will be age appropriate for students pre-K through 6th grade. The programs take place from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and are $5 per student in each school group.
