“Lake Express” secured its place in history on June 1, 2004 when it became the first fast ferry to carry vehicles and passengers in commercial service within the United States, creating a marine freeway across Lake Michigan in the process.

Operating between the cities of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Muskegon, Michigan, the ultra-modern Lake Express provides a crossing time of just 2 hours & 30 minutes, slicing in half the time it would take to drive around the southern tip of the lake through heavily congested Chicago.

Swift and sleek, Lake Express sails from mid-April to the end of October, turning Muskegon and Wisconsin into easy “day-trip” destinations as well as providing new favorite destinations on the “other side of the Lake.”

Lake Express offers capacity for 248 passengers and 46 cars, as well as motorcycles and bicycles. Pets are also welcome with kennels available for rental.

In the main passenger lounge, wide aisles separate the seating areas with “airline style” seating at the windows and group configurations of four around centerpiece tables for a capacity of 200. 

Aft of the main lounge is a Premier Class cabin equipped with comfortable, reclining chairs for 48 and the personalized service of a Steward. This cabin is also available for business groups wishing to try something a little different by holding their conference at sea.

Food & beverage is available in the “L'Expresso Galley” with a variety of menu choices from Alterra Coffee Roasters including bakery, sandwiches, salads and beverages. Alterra is something of an institution in Milwaukee where they not only serve some of the city’s best coffee, but they also roast it on its shoreside premises.

Monitors are distributed through the passenger salon and audio is distributed via ceiling mounted speakers. First-run movies are shown onboard with headphone rentals available.

Access to and from the passenger cabin from the vehicle deck could not be easier.  For those who may require assistance, an elevator - compliant with all relevant ADA requirements - is provided.

The bridge onboard Lake Express is impressive and fully equipped with the latest in marine technology including two radars, DGPS, echo sounder, gyro compass and overhead magnetic compass.

The catamaran is powered by four MTU 3000HP diesel engines, which is sufficient for speeds of 34 knots or 40 mph. Take a walk up to the upper level deck and feel the real speed of Lake Express!
