In 1870, Congress appropriated $6,000 to build a beacon on the south side of the Ludington Harbor Channel. It was first lit in 1871. In 1914, with the Million Dollar Harbor improvements, the beacon was moved to the north breakwater on a newly constructed crib.
This white, three-story pyramid-shaped tower was built in 1924. The 57-foot steel sided tower sits on a large black concrete base that angles toward the side of the pier. The light was automated in 1972 and the original fourth order Fresnel lens was taken to nearby White Pine Village Maritime Museum for exhibit in 1995.
