The three-day festival will feature a wide array of sailing vessels – from sleek two-masted cargo schooners and classic yachts to tidy little Mackinaw boats and even a replica British armed sloop from the War of 1812. The festival will include food, music, tours, rides, cannon-shooting and other merriment.
Organizers plan to start the festival with an evening “grand parade of sail” as the vessels make their way south to Traverse City’s Duncan L. Clinch Marina. Other activities will include tours, passenger rides aboard the vessels, entertainment by maritime musical groups (including Traverse City’s own Song of the Lakes) a progressive dinner and wine-tasting from ship to ship, competitions and games for youngsters – and a Sunday morning “Pancakes with Pirates” event.

This graphic first-person account of a little-remembered event in U.S. history tells the story of young soldier Godfrey Anderson’s experiences during the ill-fated 1918 military expedition against the Bolsheviks in the frozen reaches of northern Russia. As a member of the American “Polar Bears” medical corps, Anderson describes traveling by ship and train, setting up field hospitals in the vast Siberian wilderness, enduring many hardships, rubbing shoulders with Russian villagers, barely escaping from the Bolsheviks in a harrowing nighttime retreat by sleigh, and much more. His transparent narrative, laced with ironic humor, has an irresistible, wide-eyed quality to it. Historian Gordon Olson will set the geopolitical stage for Anderson’s war memoir, and recount Anderson’s story and the writing of his book. Free and open to the public.

Star players including Gerald Ford, Terry Barr and George Andrie rallied the crowds. Drawn from the collection of the Grand Rapids Public Library, this exhibit explores the story of high school football in Grand Rapids. Free and open to the public.
