Best BBQ at Friske’s Farm Market

friske-cherry-contest.JPG

You may have heard that to taste the very best barbeque in the world, you have to go south: Memphis, St. Louis or the Mississippi Delta. Now you can twist your compass 180° and head for Friske’s Farm Market in Atwood (just south of Charlevoix). Friske’s has made the commitment to being a food destination in the north. Chef Kevin Heard is preparing astonishing dishes in northern Michigan’s only outdoor kitchen including slow smoked real pit barbeque. Chef Kevin refuses to hurry the process by using gas or liquid fuel. So you get pure, unadulterated fresh smoked taste in your St. Louis style ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket, chicken and roast beef. Enjoy these delicacies alongside some great side salads, fresh baked breads and fresh fruit in season. End your meal with a dessert selection from the bakery counter, like a slice of cherry pie or the delicious caramel apple pie.

Have an event that you need catered? Their pit barbeque is portable! Chef Kevin could be live at your location serving your guests some of the choicest offerings in the north. Food is served Monday through Saturday from 7a.m. to 5p.m. Closed every Sunday. Many items are available for carry out and breakfast is served from an Ala carte menu until 10:30 a.m. Take the scenic drive into Michigan’s pure north country and experience what they like to call . Call them @ 231.599.2604 or visit www.friske.com to learn more about them.

Ghostly Dining - Bowers Harbor Inn

Bowers Harbor Inn
Traverse City
www.mytraversecity.com

Genevive Stickney is something of a celebrity even by Traverse City standards. For decades, her unhappy spirit has been playing tricks on guests and employees at the picturesque Bowers Harbor Inn – generating scores of newspaper and magazine articles and even an episode of the syndicated television show “Unsolved Mysteries.”

Bowers Harbor is a lovely cove on the western shore of the Old Mission Peninsula, a narrow strip of land (almost 18 miles long and only a mile wide) just north of the city limits. Late in the 19th century, it attracted the attention of Chicago lumber baron J.W. Stickney, who built a home there for himself and his wife. The rambling house, which still stands, was filled with odd gothic touches and whimsical nooks and set in a grove of tall trees overlooking the harbor. The Inn has been a restaurant since 1959, and is a favorite spot for fine dining in spite of (or perhaps because of) its famous ghost.
