culture destinations in West Michigan. 

Region 2

Heading up to the Traverse City area to take in some breathtaking views, great skiing, and eat some palette pleasing foods? Enhance your experience by visiting one of the artfully rich locations.

At The Dennos Museum Center you come Alive inside the 40,000 square foot complex with three changing exhibition galleries & sculpture court, "hands on" Discovery Gallery & Gallery of Inuit Art, the museum's major permanent collection. The 367-seat Milliken Auditorium offers performing events all year.


Or head on over to the Interlochen Center for the Arts and catch a concert! Interlochen Center for the Arts is a world-renowned educational center offering a summer arts camp, fine arts boarding high school, pre-k - 8th grade day school, arts classes and programs for adults, two public radio stations and year-round performances on a 1,200-acre wooded campus 16 miles southwest of Traverse City.

Region 4

The rich art filled region of Central West Michigan is hard to break up into days. This region is filled to the brim with art. Whether it be a concert, ballet performance, or gallery exhibit, timing is solely dependent on what is showing at the time you are here! Some fantastic artful places to check out are

Grand Rapids-

Broadway Grand Rapids

Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park- The 132-acre Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, features Michigan's largest tropical conservatory; one of the largest children’s gardens in the country; arid and Victorian gardens; carnivorous plant house; outdoor gardens; the Midwest's most comprehensive sculpture experience featuring internationally-acclaimed works by Rodin, Oldenburg, Moore, Rickey, di Suvero and others; indoor galleries with changing sculpture exhibitions, as well as a 1750-seat outdoor amphitheater, featuring an eclectic mix of world-renowned musicians every summer.

Grand Rapids Art Museum- Presents exhibitions of national caliber and regional distinction. Collection spans Renaissance to modern art, with particular strength in 19th and 20th century paintings, prints & drawings

Grand Rapids Ballet Company- Michigan's only professional ballet company performs contemporary & classical works. Three main-stage productions at DeVos Performance Hall each year, including The Nutcracker in December. The Company also presents three innovative in-studio productions each season & tours. School classes in ballet, jazz, & pilates available year round.

Van Andel Arena and DeVos Place- Catch a hockey game and concert- all in one weekend!

Festival of the Arts (First weekend in June) - Festival is West Michigan's premier arts event, featuring the area's best amateur & professional performers and artists. Hear rock, classical and jazz music, enjoy dance in all its many forms, watch theatre from local communities on six indoor and outdoor stages.

Muskegon

Muskegon Museum of Art- Permanent collection featuring fine art by Degas, Homer, Hopper, Whistler, Curry & others. American & French Impressionist paintings, prints, photography, sculpture & glass. Changing exhibitions & programs.

Jilly’s Gallery - Local artist Jill Barnes creates one of a kind hand cut fused glass pieces through layering, multi firings, and experimentations in a kiln. The dichroic glass, found in many of the pieces, reflects differently according to the surrounding light. Enjoy!

Region 5

The Southern West region of West Michigan is home to quaint lakeshore towns full of artful shops, galleries, and local art. If you are headed out this way, we recommend you stop in at these local favorites.

Saugatuck-

Khnemu Studio- Enjoy the ambiance of this 1890’s farm estate,which houses Khnemu Studio LLC, the working studio of artist Dawn Soltysiak and a unique contemporary fine art and craft gallery. Treat yourself to art work made by regionally and nationally known artists.The gallery artists create functional handmade pottery & art pottery.

Saugatuck Center for the Arts- The Saugatuck Center for the Arts has been working over the past seven years to transform a community eyesore – a 32,000-square foot, abandoned pie factory – into a community asset.
The facility includes a flexible classroom space, an art studio, an acoustically engineered Performance Studio, an exhibition hall, a 400-seat theatre, dressing rooms and production areas, and a newly renovated lobby. We are a wireless facility and are well-equipped for rentals.

South Haven-

Photography by Karen Murphy- Visit the Gallery Shop in quaint historic barn, 1 mile east of South Haven. Enjoy extensive selection of striking color photographs specializing in Michigan shores/landscapes. Features framed & unframed photos, limited edition note & Christmas cards. Open all year.

South Haven Center for the Arts - Home of concerts, art exhibitions & classes. The Center produces concerts & programs featuring a wide variety of styles. Our exhibitions feature outstanding artists working in all media, lecture programs to learn about the artist & classes for children & adults.

And you won’t want to miss the Dogwood Fine Arts Festival held every May in Dowagiac. Presenting the best in fine arts in Southwest Michigan is more than a slogan the festival uses, it's one that they stand by year after year.
