Harriet Colfax was one of a handful of women who kept the beacons blazing. She kept the Michigan City Light burning from 1861 until 1904. She was 37 when she became lighthouse keeper at a starting salary of $350 a year. She performed her duties without fail for 43 years, retiring at the age of 80 due to failing health.
The Michigan City Lighthouse, built in 1835, now serves as a maritime museum. It is open every day except Mondays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Directions: Take 421 North into Michigan City, through downtown and to the lakeshore. As 421 intersects with Lakeshore Drive, continue north into the park on Heisman Harbor Road in Washington Park. The lighthouse museum is on the left.
